The first generation Ford Taurus SHO was engineered by the nutters on Ford's Special Vehicle Team starting in 1989. Today it is an appreciating classic, and this particular example is owned by mustache enthusiast and My Classic Car host Dennis Gage.

Find Mr Gage's 1990 Ford Taurus SHO !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! currently bidding for $6,300 with 2 days to go.

The recipe for the first generation Taurus SHO (pronounced "show") involved sticking a Mercury Sable hood on top of a Yamaha built V6 that displaces 3.0 liters and makes 220 horsepower and 200 ft-lbs of torque. The iron block V-6 used an oversquare (bore is larger than stroke) setup and 24-valve DOHC alloy head to achieve a 7000 rpm redline.

Most of the first gen Taurii SHO you find for sale have been ridden hard and put away wet — not this one. This one has been pampered and spit shined with only the finest of mustache waxes. It will be interesting to see where the auction ends, but whoever buys this car gets an instant great story.

I WANT THAT! It looks awesome, like an oversized Ford Sierra Xr4i almost.

I think the first gen SHO looks like an overfed early Tempo.

Be glad you didn't get it. The Tempo was a sub-par machine when it was new... and it hasn't aged well!

Ford hosed it by trying to compare it to Mercedes instead of trying to beat up on Chrysler, AMC, and GM like they were supposed to. They're pretty hard to come by now, since they ended up in the hands of non-car-guys who just trashed them in the 80s and threw them away.

I might be mistaken here, but I think these were the cars that needed a hole cut in the fire wall to replace the blower motor. Not Ford's best years!

Thankfully one of mine still thinks pennies are worth saving. The other has moved on to paper money, not too interested in coins anymore.

And the Tempo was an American translation of the Sierra's Jello mold design cues. "One Ford" might have been decades in the future, but Ford did have a pretty unified global design language in the '80s.

So, does this qualify as a mustache ride?
